Macungie Borough

October 15th, 2026

Ten miles southwest of Allentown in Lehigh County lies Macungie Borough.

The name “Macungie” is derived from “maguntsche,” a place name used as early as 1730 to describe the region
that is present day Macungie and Emmaus areas. Maguntsche is a Lenape word, which translates to “bear
swamp” or “feeding of the bears.”

The borough is the second oldest borough in Lehigh County and was founded as “Millertown” in 1776 by Peter
Miller. On November 15, 1857, the village of Millerstown was incorporated as a borough. In 1875, the borough
was re-named Macungie.

Macungie is a smaller-sized borough, (total area of 1.0 sq. mi.), but big in things to do. For the ski and snow board
enthusiasts, Bear Creek Mountain Resort a popular ski resort, is located just west of the borough.

With an annual car festival, a bountiful farmers market held every Thursday evening between May and October
or walking through the Macungie Flower Park (with over 10,000 flowers!), there is much to keep one entertained.

The Allen Organ Company was founded in 1937, with its headquarters in Macungie. The company builds digital
church organs, theatre organs, and organs for home use. The first Allen Digital Organ is now in the Smithsonian
Institute1.
