Protecting Local Infrastructure Through Stormwater Resilience
November 4th, 2025November 16th is National Stormwater Day, a time to recognize the importance of managing rainwater and protecting our community’s infrastructure.
When rainfall flows over hard surfaces such as roads, parking lots, and rooftops, it becomes stormwater runoff—carrying pollutants and debris into local waterways. Excess runoff can lead to flooding, erosion, and costly damage to public and private property.
To put things in perspective:
- One inch of rain on an acre of forest or wetland results in about 750 gallons of runoff.
- The same inch on an acre of parking lot produces approximately 27,000 gallons of runoff.
Implementing green infrastructure solutions—such as rain gardens, wetlands, and other natural landscapes—can help reduce runoff, protect property, and lower maintenance costs for municipalities.
